Of all of the minerals mined during this time period was zircon, a semiprecious gem with monazite and trace amounts of thorium that was mined. Zircons can typically be found in pegmatite formations that have undergone years of upheaval, erosion, uplifting, while miners specifically sought them by sorting Carolina gneiss exfoliated granite formations containing various minerals such as thorium monazite and auerlite.

Land purchases began as far back as 1780s by Matthew Maybin and William Capps from families such as Matthew Maybin, William Capps and others in what was then known as Green River community. A train depot named both “Zirconia and Tuxedo” served all three communities within what would later become Zirconia.
